The Sound of Poetry

Columbia State Community College's First Poetry Recitation Contest

What is it? This is a chance for students to compete and show their love of poetry. A student will select two contrasting poems (one greater than 25 lines and one 25 lines or fewer) from the approved anthology-a link is listed below. The student will then perform these poems from memory before a panel of judges comprised of Columbia State faculty.

How to enter? Email your name and the two poems you will be reading to sga@columbiastate.edu by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9. No entry fees are required.

How is it judged? The students will be judged upon physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding and overall performance. There will be prizes for the top five finalists, as well as prizes for the top three places and door prizes for all participants.

Where is it? Ledbetter Auditorium (down stairs in the Frank G. Clemet building on the Columbia campus).

When is it? Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m. (admission is free and open to the public).

When is the deadline? You must enter by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9. There will be a rehearsal the day of the competition at 5 p.m.

Who can compete? All currently enrolled students at Columbia State Community College, regardless of which campus you attend.

Where do I find the poems? Go to http://www.poetryoutloud.org/poems-and-performance/find-poems to find poems. Any poem in the printed Poetry Out Loud Anthology is also acceptable.
