C-STATE OFFERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES THIS WINTER

January, February and March Courses

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Jan. 10, 2011) - - - If you haven't made your New Year's resolutions yet, then you can start the year right with professional development. Columbia State Community College's Center for Economic and Workforce Development is offering several professional development classes this winter, including a series of Microsoft Office 2010 introductory and intermediate classes that will have you mastering the latest upgrade in no time.

Come on your own or bring your whole office. As a special invitation to Middle Tennessee employers, Columbia State is offering a discount for groups of four or more that register for any or all of the classes. There is no need to worry because Columbia State is closer than you think. The main campus is approximately 35 miles south of Cool Springs and 35 miles north of Pulaski.

Introduction to Word 2010 is a hands-on class in which the student will learn how to add, move through and edit text, move words from one part of your document to another, work on two or more documents simultaneously, change the size or appearance of text, change margins and tab settings, run grammar and spell check, use the thesaurus and save, retrieve, copy, organize and print documents. This class will be on the Columbia campus on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

Introduction to Excel 2010 teaches students to sort and analyze data, design custom charts and graphs and format worksheets using mathematical formulas. Get started with Excel 2010 by attending this class. The course will be Friday, Jan. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Then $129 fee includes textbook.

Introduction to PowerPoint 2010 teaches students how to create professional-quality slide presentations that grab and hold your audience's attention from start to finish. Students will explore the latest features of PowerPoint, from the all-new file menu to the backstage view. Find out how to create dazzling presentations formatted with themes and a variety of slide layouts. Learn how to embellish slides with text, objects, SmartArt, multimedia, animation, sound, charts, clip art, and hyperlinks. The class will be on Friday, Jan. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

The Introduction to QuickBooks 2010 course covers banking and billing activities, working with reports and budgets, protecting and backing up data, etc. This class will be take place twice this winter, once on Friday, Jan. 27 and again Friday, March 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

Microsoft project 2010 teaches students how to effectively plan, implement and control projects using Microsoft Project 2010. You'll learn how to use Microsoft Project to think through and organize your project's details, plan a schedule, sequence tasks, produce a baseline, assign resources and costs, track your progress, identify and analyze variances, and revise your project plan. The class takes place Friday, March 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

During Intermediate Word 2010 students will work with styles, sections and columns, and they will learn how use the navigation pane to work with outlines. They will learn how to format tables, print labels and envelopes, and work with graphics. They will also use document templates, manage document revisions and work with Web features. The class will be on the Columbia campus Friday, Feb. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

By enrolling in Intermediate Excel 2010, students will learn how to use multiple worksheets and workbooks efficiently, and they will start working with more advanced formatting options, including styles, themes and backgrounds. They will also learn how to create outlines and subtotals, create and apply cell names, and work with tables. Students will save workbooks as Web pages, insert and edit hyperlinks, and learn to share workbooks by email. This class will be held on the Columbia campus on Friday, Feb. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

The Intermediate Quickbooks 2010course includes banking and billing activities, working with reports and budgets, protecting and backing up data, etc. The class will be on the Columbia campus Friday, Feb. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

Introduction to Excel 2007 teaches students how to get started with Excel 2007 and work with formulas and functions. This class will be on the Columbia campus Friday, Feb. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.

Introduction to Word 2007 teaches students how to create documents in Word 2007, edit documents, format text and paragraphs, format documents, and create and format tables. The class is Friday, March 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes the textbook.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is this 3-day leadership course, based on the Steven Covey book. Participants will learn seven habits that can make a huge difference in the effectiveness as individuals and the way they work with groups. Instructor Bill McEwen will teach students how to improve their ability to prioritize work; manage time; react more meaningfully to situations encountered; find ways to solve problems in a win-win manner; communicate more effectively; and to find better direction for their personal and professional lives. The class will be at the Columbia campus on Friday, Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $399 fee includes all course materials.

Often the decisions we face in life are choices between "good" and "best." Developing the skill to focus on what really matters is critical to attaining balance and fulfillment in both your personal and professional life. If your life is ruled by the clock, maybe you're missing the point. Achieving Life Balance through Effective Time Management is a class in which students will learn how to examine their own priorities and align daily activities with long term goals. Instructor Bill McEwen will teach students how to make the most of their choices, relationships, career and more. This class will be at the Columbia campus on Monday, Jan. 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The $109 fee includes four hours of instruction and a certificate of completion.

The OSHA 10-Hour Voluntary Compliance Course will train the employer how to keep employees safe and the facility in compliance with OSHA standards. Send a company representative to participate in the program to receive a review of OSHA standards, inspection information, citations, penalties and the most cited violations. The training also includes Subpart H-hazardous materials; Subpart S-electrical; Subpart O-machine guarding I and lockout/tagout; Subpart D-walking and working surfaces; and Subpart E-Route of exit and hazard communication. The course instructor is Wilder Allen, one of the leading safety experts in the nation. The $360 course fee includes all materials, CEU's, 10 hours of instruction, PowerPoint programs to assist with safety training, a certificate of completion and an official course card from the U.S. Department of Labor and OSHA. This class is Thursday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb.10 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Statistical Process Control Introduction is a class designed for manufacturing employees, including quality engineers, technicians, production workers, supervisors, plant managers, etc., and it teaches students how to improve the quality of their product or service. The class also helps students understand when/how often to make adjustments to processes in order to improve quality. SPC Introduction can also help students better understand the basic principles of SPC such as causes of variation; frequency histograms and check sheets; variable control charts; attribute control charts; machine and process capability; and quality problem-solving tools. C-State is offering SPC Introduction three times this winter: Tuesday, Jan. 17, 24 and 31; Tuesday, Feb. 7, 14 and 21; and again Tuesday, March 6, 13 and 20. The fee for the class is $139.

Paralegal Career Advancement Certificate trains you to interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, prepare legal documents and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. Topics include legal terminology, introduction to the evidentiary predicate, identifying relevant authority, legal research, and legal writing and appellate procedure. This 6-week class takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, Feb. 25 to April 1. The $1,189 fee does not include textbooks. Required textbooks are approximately $340.
